Bio

Manfredi Clemente is a composer of musique concrète, sound artist and sound designer based in Palermo (IT). Especially interested in the aesthetic problems related to recorded sounds, his theoretical and artistic research is focused on the concept of sound image, on its phenomenology, its evocative power and spatial character. It is around these themes that his musicological and musical studies revolve, including the MRes and PhD that he pursued at the University of Birmingham under supervision of Jonty Harrison. The idea that sound is amenable to exploration by the listener guides Clemente’s work, an exploration that is an opportunity of reasoning on the auditum symbolic value as well as the key for a metexic, partecipated listening experience.

During the ears spent in Birmingham he has been part of B.E.A.S.T. – Birmingham ElectroAcoustic Sound Theatre, one of the largest orchestra loudspeaker in the world; between 2011 and 2016 he has been curating the installation and performances of the acousmonium of the Contemporary Music Festival of Cagliari, for which he worked as technical supervisor and performer.

Clemente has a specific interest in applying the same technics and refinement that characterize acousmatic music to other art fields (theatre, dance, performance and installations). This led him to address the sound design of and to compose for several theatrical performances, developing collaborations with numerous visual and performance artists. Between 2017 and 2019, on the side of his compositional activity, he has been working for the Fondazione Teatro Massimo of Palermo as an A/V technician. Since Autumn 2020 he is working for the same Opera House as an artistic consultant, supervising the audio streaming and recording activities.

For several years he has been part of the MIniM Ensemble, curating the live electronics for several original works; in 2019 he started working in a duo (electronics and guitar) with Marco Cappelli; in the same year he founded with guitarist Giuseppe Lomeo the improvisation ensemble ‘Odd One Out’.
