Bio

Manfredi Clemente is a musique concrète composer, sound artist and sound designer based in Palermo (IT). Especially interested in the aesthetic problems related to recorded sounds, his music is an attempt of creating a purely sonic poetic text and is based on the idea that space represents the main dimension of perception and thence of the evocative processes involved in listening. The MRes and PhD that he completed in 2017 under supervision of Jonty Harrison at the University of Birmingham, were focused precisely on the phenomenology of the sound image and its spatial character. The idea that sound is amenable of exploration by the listener guides Clemente’s work, an exploration that is an opportunity of reasoning on the auditum symbolic value as well as the key for a metexic, partecipated listening experience.

Space is also the fundamental aspect of the presentation in concert of his compositions, always diffused on multichannel systems. The dedication to sound spatialization led Clemente to curate for several years the installation and performance of the acousmonium of the Contemporary Music Festival of Cagliari, for which he worked as Technical supervisor and performer. Moreover he has been a member of B.E.A.S.T. – Birmingham ELectroAcoustic Sound Theatre for several years, performing his works on systems of nearly 100 diffusion channel.

Clemente has a specific interest in applying the same technics and refinement that characterize acousmatic music to other art fields (theatre, dance, performance and installations). This led him to address the sound design of and to compose for several performances and to develop stable collaborations with the artistic group LeMosche and the theatre company SoggettileTeatro. Since 2017, on the side of his compositional activity, he started working for the Fondazione Teatro Massimo of Palermo as an A/V technicians. This took him to curate audio and video projections for several directors, artists and companies such as Fabio Cherstich and AES+F, Ricci/Forte, Carolyn Carlson Company, Kor’sia and Preljocaj.
